A Little TLC Goes a Long Way!
Jewelry Care
Your jewelry is a treasure. And, like any treasure, it deserves a little love and care to keep it looking its best. At Wimmer’s Diamonds, we’re happy to provide complimentary cleaning and inspection services for all your cherished pieces—even those not purchased from us Short on time? Don’t worry! Here are some simple tips for caring for your jewelry at home.
It Starts with a Look
Take a moment to go through your jewelry collection — you might even rediscover a piece you haven’t worn in years! If you have items that don’t suit your style anymore, consider setting them aside for a design restyle. Stop by or schedule an appointment with us, and let’s create something new and beautiful together. Once that decision is made, look carefully at those pieces that might need extra care and cleaning.

Diamonds & Colored Gemstones
Diamonds are the hardest gemstone on the Earth, but they’re not indestructible. So it's always a good idea to remove your diamond jewelry during strenuous activities or when you are exposed to harsh chemicals (like chlorine). Most diamonds and some colored gemstones can be cleaned safely with warm (not hot!) water, mild dish soap, and a soft brush.

Pearls & Vintage Jewelry
Remember this rule: “Last thing on, first thing off.” Pearls should always be the last thing you put on when getting ready and the first thing to come off when you get home. Pearls are delicate and should be kept away from perfumes, hairsprays, and lotions to preserve their luster. Gently clean them with warm, soapy water and a soft brush. Handle vintage and antique jewelry carefully, and stick to a lint-free cloth and water for cleaning.

Gold
Gold jewelry loves a little TLC! Buff it gently with a soft cloth and use a mild soap solution for cleaning. Avoid harsh chemicals or bleach, as they can tarnish lower-purity gold pieces.

Platinum
Platinum is durable, but even it can scratch. Store your platinum pieces in a soft velvet pouch and avoid heavy cleaning solutions. A gentle buff with a soft cloth and mild, soapy water is perfect for keeping it looking great. Over time, platinum can develop a “patina” finish, which many people love the look of. But, if you prefer the shiny look, it can easily be buffed out in our shop.

Sterling Silver
To keep this precious metal shining, avoid exposure to moisture, peroxide, or household solvents. Use a soft, dry cloth to buff away dullness. Our #1 tip: Wear your silver jewelry regularly—your skin’s natural oils help prevent oxidation and tarnish. If it’s tarnished, a sterling silver cleaner works wonders, or you can bring it to us for expert restoration.
Additional Tips for Keeping Your Jewelry Beautiful
Schedule Regular Checkups
Your jewelry deserves a little professional attention now and then. Bring your fine jewelry to Wimmer’s for a bi-annual inspection (at a minimum). We’ll check prongs, gemstones, and clasps and provide a thorough cleaning.
Think of it as a spa day for your favorite pieces!
Bonus Tips
- Use an electric toothbrush with pulsed water to clean hard-to-reach areas.
- Rinse your jewelry in a glass of water to avoid losing stones down the drain.
- Lay chains flat when not worn. For extra protection, put your chain in a Ziploc bag with the clasp outside of the zip to prevent tangling.
