Fun Diamond Facts
- South Africa lacks wood, so most homes were built with clay bricks. Residents started finding diamonds in the walls of their homes – a clue which led prospectors to the first major discovery of diamonds.
- Diamond smuggling has always been a problem in the mines. The Kimberly mines in South Africa have on record one case where an employee swallowed 21 rough diamonds totaling 348 carats.
- Underground diamond mines in South Africa extend to a depth of 3000 feet and are highly mechanized and efficient. They are underground cities with trucks, trains and workshops. No equipment is ever brought back to the surface.
- The largest diamond ever discovered was name the Cullinan. Weighing 3106 carats, it was the size of a man’s fist!
- 100,000 tons of earth must be removed to produce a 1 carat diamond
